A Goodbye and a Hello

In December, Barb McInnis resigned from the position of treasurer. We thank her for her work for the BCGA and look forward to seeing her out on the trails.

In January, the board asked Madelene Friesen to take the post of the treasurer for the remainder of the term, which will end at this year’s AGM in June. We are happy to say that Madelene (or Mad as she is known – caching name Ricnmad) accepted. We thank her for volunteering her time to the BCGA.

GPS Crowdfunding

Have you ever used our set of GPSs? Have you borrowed them for a community event? Do you want to support others being introduced to Geocaching by experienced cachers? Then this is the crowdfunding for you!

The BCGA has an inventory of GPS that they lend out FREE OF CHARGE to groups all over BC. The units are used by volunteer geocache hiders and as teaching tools.  Groups that have borrowed the units in the past include Geocache Event Planners, Scouts, Cadets, Daycare Facilities to Retired Seniors Homes!

Our units are currently very old models and in need of updating in order to best teach borrowers how to use devices that are the current standard in Geocaching.

The money raised by this campaign will go directly to new GPS units being purchased so BCGA can enable even more groups to take advantage of the program. BCGA has lent the current inventory out to over 30 groups and would like to make the program bigger and better.

If you wish to donate to our cause but you prefer not to use the crowdfunding website, you are welcome to send us a cheque with any donation value you choose, with a note stating the funds are for the “New GPS Fund” to:

2014 Anniversary GeoArt Project

As you are aware, some time has passed since this project was initiated to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the BCGA. The new board has been trying to resurrect the project, but we have to say that the obstacles are too great and we have decided to cancel the project.

The original puzzles sent in have been lost and we have only been able to recreate 16 of the 44 from contacting geocachers who submitted them originally. We have inspected the cache sites and in the intervening months there has been a lot of changes and new construction. We also liaised with local reviewers. Changes to the cache placement guidelines and the need for a maintenance plan have created other issues for us.

Like you, we are disappointed that it has come to this, but we feel that this is the best way forward for the Association. We have some ideas for the cache containers – stay tuned for more information in future months!
